on-the-go food for athletes
When Dr. Allen Lim left the lab to work with pro cyclists, he found athletes weary of processed bars and gels and the same old pasta. So Lim joined professional chef Biju Thomas to make eating delicious and practical. Their groundbreaking Feed Zone Cookbook brought the favorite recipes of the pros to everyday athletes.
It's not often that a sequel turns out as good as the original (Remember Ghostbusters 2? Neither do we.) But the new Feed Zone Portables Cookbook may just be the rare exception to that rule.
In their new cookbook Feed Zone Portables, Chef Biju and Dr. Lim offer 75 all-new and ALL PORTABLE food recipes for cyclists, runners, triathletes, mountain bikers, climbers, hikers, and backpackers. Each real food recipe is simple, delicious, easy to make—and ready to go on your next ride, run, climb, or hike.
Feed Zone Portables keeps all the most popular features of The Feed Zone Cookbook including quick and easy recipes for athletes, beautiful full-color photographs of every dish, complete nutrition data, tips on why these are the best foods for athletes, and time-saving ways on how to cook real food every day.
Try out new rice cakes, two-bite pies, griddle cakes, waffles, baked eggs, sticky bites, rice balls, paninis, cakes, and cookies. Wherever you go, these real foods can easily come with you and will nourish your best performance.

This book gave me the tools I need to build pleasing portables.
The science: Bonus!! I thought I was buying a recipe book with a little scientific introduction. Nope - the science was probably the most helpful. Written in a conversational tone, it explains why certain foods are used in the recipes, which helps in deciding what to substitute to account for taste, or not to account for structure and nutrition.
Recipes: easy to follow, with “optional” ingredients listed. Clear, descriptive photos provided of steps that could be confusing. Oh, did I mention satisfying!?
Lots of flavor combinations and vegan and gluten-free options. Not strictly my thing, but that doesn’t stop them from being delicious and satisfying.
I am very glad I bought this useful book.

If you enjoy cooking at all, even just a little bit, and you or someone you love is on the move in any form of human-powered activity, this book is a must have. Making the recipes in this book, and then consuming them on top of a mountain after hiking, riding, or skiing up it, is amazing. It's like the best pre-packaged energy-food you've ever tasted, except better, and you made it. The satisfaction alone from knowing that you made that delicious rice cake or two-bite pie you're eating in some awe-inspiring outdoor location, on your regular Tuesday evening trail, (or just in your kitchen) is worth the $24.95.
The book also has a fair amount of detail on the science behind why certain foods are better for your body while it's working hard, as well as some incredibly practical tips on how to get the most out of your food budget and kitchen equipment.
The bottom line is, if you have a kitchen (or access to an electrical outlet), go on adventures outside of any sort, and eat things, this book is well worth the money.

This book provides information for how to fuel while exercising and how to prepare your own food to pack and eat. The recipes are well laid out and easy to prepare. This and the parent book should be in every athletes kitchen.

Just received the book and still going through the science info in front of the book. That info alone makes the book worth the money! Looking forward to the recipes.
Now if I could sit with Dr Lim for a few hours to get personalized help with nutrition while riding... :)
Thanks for the great book!

Bought this for my grandpa as a gift, both of us are heavy into cycling and he's all about getting the sustenance he needs and not necessarily eating for taste I thought this could be a find way for him tiger the fuel he needs and switch up his meal planning a bit. He loved it and was so excited he already knew of the author and the book!
